7 Days in on our Learning Journey!

 Good Afternoon,

The first 7 days of school have been a great time to build relationships with everyone in the class, and it is starting to settle into a place where everyone feels safe and comfortable in their new classroom. The students have done a great job of establishing routines, creating class expectations they want, and a mission statement that we will try and accomplish daily. It is hard to not notice the positive energy of every student as they walk into the classroom each day, as they bring the life and energy that truly brings a classroom to life.

Week in Review:

Math: Students worked together to create class posters to talk about the importance of these 4 things in math: Math talk, mistakes are powerful, speed is not important, and believing in yourself. We also co-created a chart of how to have success in math from a students role, and a teacher role to help establish what we can all do to have success in math this year!

Writing: Writers have been eager to start writing personal narratives where they get to show off their writing skills while also telling about stories that are important to them. Writers learned two strategies to help them if they get stuck finding an idea where they can think of either a person or a place that matters to them, and pick out a moment from those two that they could write about. The writers already have drafted at least 1-2 stories these first 7 days alone!

Reading: The class could not wait when they were given reading time, and it blows me away how excited and well the class is doing in reading. The motivation to want to read has been great, so we started right into our first unit, Series Books, and they already have book clubs set up. They are well into their first book this week, and will be looking to start the 2nd book in their series next week already!

Leader in Me: Students have been learning the 7 habits, and have filled our room with charts as to why each of the habits are important to have in our life! We have learned how to be proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, and also seeking to understand before being understood. It is new learning for our students this year, and it will be exciting to see the growth they make as they continue to learn!

A Look Ahead:

Safety Week is next week Sept.13th-17th! Expect a letter coming home about all the things we will be practicing here at school for this week!

i-Ready testing will happen next week in our classroom. For these initial fall tests, it is a great way for us as teachers and staff to see where students are at coming back from summer so we can best meet the needs for every students this year!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Mr. VW
