Another Month of School Done, How?!?

Image
Good Afternoon, This past week it really hit me we are actually closer to the end of the school year, than we are to the beginning. Sometimes you get so caught up in the daily work and the learning process of the school year, that it hits you when you walk outside and feel the air, or see the snow melting, or hear students ask you if they have to wear their snow gear since it is SO HOT outside. The class has persevered through the year, and have been working hard daily that when you stop and look up it amazes you how much time has gone by, and how much growth has been made. I am really looking forward to these final months of school to see how much growth we can continue to make, and continuing to be our best self every single day. Week in Review: Math: The mathematicians finished another unit of math, and worked on corrections to solidify their learning of the unit. They participated in some new math games to finish up their week, and celebrate their hard work. Writing: Writers p...

Another Week Here and Gone

Good Afternoon, As we transitioned to new units in both reading and writing, with new units coming up in math and content as well, the students are really growing in their ability to adapt to new changes and routines. They have done a really great job of pushing themselves to do their best everyday, and I am very proud of their daily efforts to keep working on becoming our best selves! We had a very fun time with the Penny War as well, as every amount raised will be donated to the Pillars warming shelter! Week in Review: Math: Students worked on graphs and data, while also getting themselves prepared for the unit test which is next week on fractions, time, measurement, graphs and data! Writing: Writers transitioned from writing literary essays back to informational writing with a focus on writing about what they observed in their nonfiction research club books. Reading: Readers were hard at work as they began in their nonfiction unit with Research Clubs! They are starting research...

100 Days and Counting heading into Valentine's Day Weekend Mini-Break

Image
Good Afternoon, This year we may have not been able to do a traditional Valentine's Day exchanges and celebrations, but the class made the most of the time we were able to just be together. With it being cold all week, we had indoor recess, and a lot of time is spent with each other so I am just reminded how thankful I am that we are able to all be here in school learning together. Week in Review: Math - Students had a quick quiz on telling time, and began to transition to working with graphs and data. I gave the students an extra credit opportunity that if they see a graph over the long weekend, to take a picture and have it emailed to me for a future class treat! Writing - Writers wrote more literary essays this week (even one on a short Disney film Dante's Lunch), and began to self assess and work with partners to identify the techniques that great writers use all the time in essay writing! Reading - Readers celebrated all of their learning with a reading celebration! They ...

Snowy Cold Week Couldn't Slow The Class Down!

Image
Good Afternoon, As we head into a weekend after another full week of learning, I write this update to you so proud of all the students. The resiliency they have shown when things get difficult, or persevering to do their best work no matter what the subject, but the camaraderie and family feel of helping each other while also making sure we are all looking after each other. This year has been a year where I have seen this class really grow in a lot of areas, but the area of looking out after each other I really saw this week (family atmosphere) and I just want to share that everyone should be very proud of your child for their continued growth this year.  Week in Review: Math: This week the mathematicians worked with time whether that be telling the time on a digital clock, calculating elapsed time, or figuring out how many minutes before or after the hour it may be they pushed themselves to really understand these brand new concepts! Writing: The literary essayists are start...

Off and Running into February!

Image
Good Afternoon, It was such a great week celebrating NDLC, and seeing the school spirit in dress up days and culminating with the Virtual Pep Rally! Along with all the great learning and discovering that happened throughout the week, it truly was a great week to celebrate all the good that is associated with NDLC, and that is all of the students and families that make it GREAT! Week in Review: Math: The math work took a big shift in our thinking with fractions, and number lines along with comparing fractions, and we ended the week with a quick quiz. Students are working really hard to master this new thinking! Writing: Our essay writers ended this week and took a look at the growth they have made as essayists in just one week! So much to be proud of! Reading: Readers were focusing on noticing the story mountain and how our characters change along it, and noticing the problems in the stories and how our characters react to them. A Look Ahead: Report Cards Sent home Monday. That is ...

Halftime of the School Year!

Image
Good Afternoon, Today marks the halfway point in this school year. There is so much to celebrate in terms of growth for everyone, and so many great things happening every day in the classroom! It's truly been such a special year for so many reasons, and I look forward to continue to build on the foundation we laid in the first half for continued growth in the second half!  Week in Review: Math: We began our Unit with focus on Fractions! This is some very new thinking for students, but we are persevering, and discovering new learning every day! Writing: Writers began to work on literary essays, and I am so excited for this unit because the students were very excited about the prospect of this kind of writing! Reading: Our readers are really trying to focus in on their theories about characters, and noticing everything they can about the characters in their books. We started book clubs which everyone was excited about! Content: Our research led us to understand First Nations an...

Another Week of Growing Completed!

Image
Good Afternoon, As we approach the halfway point in the school year with this past week seeing us completing a lot of testing whether that be math unit assessments, math mid-year assessments, i-Ready assessments, or even end of writing unit assessments! It has been a busy stretch indeed, but the one thing I love is the kids resiliency even during a long, tiring stretch. We always talk about two things we can control and expect of ourselves everyday with the first being our attitude, and the second being our effort. I am so proud of every single student for their effort and attitude, and look forward to what growth we all continue to make in the second half of the year! Week in Review:  Math: Students completed their Unit 2 and Mid-Year assessments, as well as their Winter Math i-Ready> The results demonstrate what I have been seeing in the classroom as they persevered through a busy week in math as we look forward to our next unit starting next week. Writing: The writers c...
